Dysentery is a type of gastroenteritis (infection that affects the intestinal tract) and an inflammation of the intestine, particularly the colon, due to infectious pathogens (such as viruses, parasites and bacteria), leading to severe Diarrhea, abdominal pains, and possibly Fever.
• It results in Diarrhea with blood and mucus (or an inflammation that occurs in The Intestine leading to severe stomach pain and Diarrhea).
Types of Dysentery
1) Amoebic Dysentery
• Its an Infection of the large intestine caused by Entamoeba histolytica (a single celled parasite).
• This form of dysentery is more likely to spread among institutionalised people with poor sanitation, spread by food washed in contaminated Water or being prepared by an infected person.
• When trophozoites (the active form) invade the intestinal wall they can cause a large lump or even obstruct The Intestine.
• Abscesses can also form in The Liver and be transported in to the blood stream.
• More serious problems result from invasion into organs or perforations of the intestinal walls.
• Its usually caused by consuming intoxicated food or Water and the symptoms can be very painful.
• Severe pain in the abdomen
• Nausea and Vomiting
• Blood painful stools along with mucus
• Fatigue
2) Bacillary Dysentery
• Its an Infection of the large intestine caused by shigellosis (an Infection by bacteria of the genus Shigella).
• The term might seem to refer to any dysentery caused by any bacilliform bacteria, but its meaning is restricted by convention to Shigella dysentery.
• The First sign of bacillary dysentery is Diarrhea.
• Blood while passing motion
• A severe pain in the abdomen
• High Fever
• Nausea and Vomiting
Causes of Dysentery
• Dysentery is as a results of inflammation and ulceration of the lower portion of the bowels causing bloody flux (the stools contain mostly of mucus and blood), with major symptoms such as Colicky pain in the abdomen followed by Diarrhea, pain in the limbs and also Fever.
• Bacillary dysentery has usually a sudden onset whereas amoebic dysentery comes gradually leading to loss of weight and Anemia. In acute cases there may be perforation of The Intestine and severe hemorrhage. Involvement of The Liver generally results chronic amoebic dysentery.
Symptoms of Dysentery
• Nauseated feeling
• Vomiting
• High Fever (above 100 degrees fahrenheit)
• Dehydration
• Stomach pain and cramping
• Diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
• Severe abdominal pain even if touched gently
• Stomach Bloating
• A desperate feeling of constantly passing stools
• Weight loss
Dietary Effects on the Treatment of Dysentery
• The patient (at the initially stage) should fast as long as the acute symptoms are present, only taking Orange Juice and Water (or substitute it with Buttermilk as an alternative that fights bacteria).
• When the acute symptoms are over, the patient can take Rice, fresh ripe Fruits and skimmed Milk.
• Solid foods should be gradually and carefully introduced as per the pace of recovery (but all types of flesh foods must be avoided, including tea, Coffee, white sugar, white flour and Alcohol in all forms).
• The patient must be given small doses of Castor Oil in the form of emulsion to facilitate faster removal of offensive matter, to minimize the Strain during defecation and also to lubricate the ulcerated surfaces.
• The mechanical removal of accumulated Poisonous matter should be done by giving low pressure enema (can be done 2-3 daily, giving as much Water as the patient can tolerate).
• A hot Water bag may be applied over the abdomen.
Home Remedies for Dysentery
• The patient should observe complete fast during the period of persistence of Diarrhea. Water mixed with Lemon or Orange Juice may be taken.
• Alternate hot and cold applications for about 10 minute 3-4 times a day is recommended so long as the abdominal pain persists, followed by abdominal wet packs.
Complications Caused by Dysentery
• Dehydration (life-threatening in cases of children below 5 years of age).
• Postinfectious Arthritis (and the pain that accompanies it can be unbearable especially in the joints).
• Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (the shigella bacteria that are responsible for the cause of dysentery can cause it, where the bacteria can block red blood cells from entering the kidneys, causing Anemia, Kidney Failure or reduce in platelet count, thus the infected person can face seizures even after treatment).
