Malaria is an acute febrile life-threatening disease caused by plasmodium parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. The attack typically lasts for 6-10 hours and repeats on the second (2) day when the infection is caused by Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, and Plasmodium ovale and every third (3) day when caused by Plasmodium Malariae.
Malaria Facts
1) Malaria is preventable and curable.
2) There are an estimated 219 million cases of Malaria in 87 countries annually.
The Malarial fever attack consists of:
1) The cold stage (shivering and chills),
2) The hot stage (fever), and
3) The sweating stage (sweating and tiredness).
Mechanism of Action of Malaria
• The plasmodium parasite gets into the blood stream from where it travels to The Liver where it matures and multiplies.
• After approximately two (2) weeks the parasite starts to attack and infect the red blood cells causing them to burst open in the Human Body.
Causes of Malaria
Malaria is a disease caused by the bite of an anopheles mosquito of the plasmodium type (the protozoan parasite) and the five (5) species recognized so far to infect humans are:
• Plasmodium falciparum – predominant in Africa
• Plasmodium vivax – predominant in Asia, Latin America, and a few regions in Africa
• Plasmodium ovale – predominant in West Africa and western Pacific
• Plasmodium Malariae – predominant worldwide
• Plasmodium knowlesi – predominant in Southeast Asia
Symptoms of Malaria (Mild/Uncomplicated)
Symptoms usually appear 10–15 days after the infective mosquito bite and typically last 6-10 hours.
• Diarrhea
• Fever
• Headaches
• Joint Pain
• Nausea and Vomiting
• Sweating followed by a return to normal temperature with tiredness.
• Body pains
• Chills
• Cold sensation with shivering
• Confusion
• Loss of appetite
• Seizures (sometimes occur in children with the disease)
• Tiredness
Symptoms of Malaria (Severe)
These occur when the Infection has spread to various organs, causing organ failure.
• Fever and Sweating
• Hypoglycemia (low blood glucose).
• Kidney Failure
• Respiratory conditions
• Abnormalities in blood coagulation and bleeding
• Acute kidney injury
• Blood coagulation process abnormalities
• Cerebral Malaria (with abnormal behaviour, impairment of consciousness, seizures, coma, or other neurologic abnormalities)
• Deep breathing and Acute Respiratory distress Syndrome (ARDS, an inflammatory reaction in the lungs that inhibits oxygen exchange) in relation to metabolic acidosis.
• Hemoglobinuria (hemoglobin in the urine) due to hemolysis
• Hyper-parasitemia (more than 5% of the red blood cells are infected by Malaria parasites).
• Impaired consciousness
• Low blood pressure caused by cardiovascular collapse
• Metabolic acidosis (excessive acidity in the blood and tissue Fluids), often in association with Hypoglycemia.
• Multi-organ failure in extreme fatal cases
• Multiple convulsions
• Prostration
• Severe Anemia due to hemolysis (destruction of the red blood cells)
Simple Tips for Malaria
• Do not allow Water to stagnate anywhere (or stagnated Water bodies should be sprayed with mosquito repellant sprays).
• Keep home airy, clean, dry, and hygienic.
• Wear long pants and full-sleeved shirts while traveling in a tropical area.
• Use mosquito repellants while sleeping.
• Take a light diet without much cooking and without much oil and spices.
• Include green leafy Vegetables in your diet.
• Eat Protein foods as they provide the Energy required for body’s repair.
• Don’t eat any Lentils during Malarial Fevers. They take a long time to digest and also produce gas in the body; thus aggravating symptoms.
• Avoid soft drink, Dark Chocolates, etc.
Preventive Mesures for Malaria
• The surroundings should be kept clean.
• Water logging should be avoided as mosquitoes breed in stagnated Water.
• Malaria can be transferred from an infected mother to her unborn baby, through blood transfusions.
• Syringes and organ transplants from an infected person to a healthy person should be avoided.
• Using mosquito repellents and nets.
• Sleeping under an insecticide-treated net (ITN).
• Indoor residual spraying (IRS) with insecticides.
• Anti-Malarial medicines can also be used to prevent Malaria.
• Clearing stagnant Water bodies and bushes around residential areas.
