Hydrotherapy (Larger Cold-to-Heating Hydrotherapies) applications such as Wet Sheet Pack is a bed sheet wrung out of cold Water, and then quickly draped around a person, who is then covered with a 1-2 blankets. The body (in reaction), quickly begins warming-up the sheet, and fairly soon turns it into a moist heat heating pack.
Different Stages of Wet Sheet Packs
Wet Sheet Pack has four (4) different effects or stages, depending on how long it is left on or according to the degree of warming the pack undergoes. It is often desirable to prolong the effect of one stage.
1) The Cooling (or Evaporating) Stage
2) The Neutral Stage
3) The Heating Stage
4) The Sweating StageBefore the sheet has been warmed to body temperature (5-12 minutes) the blanket may be folded back and cold Water sprinkled on the sheet over the patient.
The patient may be fanned to hasten evaporation and more Water sprinkled on.Effects: * A powerful antipyretic
Begins when the temperature of the pack reaches or slightly exceeds that of the Skin (about 94 degrees F).
May be prolonged by removing some of the dry coverings after the warming up has well begun.
To conclude, uncover one part at a time, dry thoroughly and cover with a warmed sheet.Effects: * Marked Sedative effect, induces relaxation and sleep. Useful for Insomnia, mania, convulsions, restlessness, nervous exhaustion, nervous Indigestion, and hypopepsia.
Begins when the Skin temperature rises slightly and ends with the beginning of general perspiration.
Tonic and heating effects may be prolonged by applying cold Water to the head and neck continuously to check excessive Sweating.
For tonic effects the pack should continue about 20 minutes.Effects: * Mild tonic and derivative effects.
Sweating may be increased by additional coverings, hot Water bottles or fomentations placed within the folds of the dry blanket, drinking of hot Water or Lemonade.
Cold compresses on head should not be very cold or renewed too frequently.Effects: * A very valuable eliminative and spoliative measure. Useful for Alcoholism, nicotine Poisoning, selected cases of chronic nephritis, and Gout, transient Fevers in Infants and children, Bronchitis, Colds, Influenza, Jaundice Measles and scarlet Fever (to help develop the eruption).
Precautions (4th stage only):
* Diabetic patients (especially if the hot foot bath is used.)
* People with severe Colds or Influenza.
* Feeble persons.
* Skin Eruptions.
Key Points:
• May give hot foot bath while preparing for the hydrotherapy treatment.
• Have edge of blanket on far side hang farther down than near edge. Cover lower third of pillow.
• Wring as dry as possible. Place upper edge of sheet a little below upper edge of blanket.
• Shoulders 3 or 4 inches below upper edge of sheet.
• Wrap snugly enough to come in contact with Skin in all places.
• Fold sheet over shoulders and neck, to exclude air.
• Ensure that the wet sheet is well covered with the dry blanket in all places to exclude air and protect Skin from contact with blanket.
Four (4) Types of Wet Sheet Pack
1) Cooling Wet-Sheet Pack
2) Neutral Wet-Sheet Pack
3) Heating Wet-Sheet Pack
4) Sweating Wet-Sheet Pack
1) Cooling Wet-Sheet Pack
These hydrotherapy is the First stage of the pack before the sheet has been warmed to the temperature of the body.
5-12 minutes is needed to reach this stage.
At the end of this time the effect can be intensified by removing the sheet and applying another (wet, cold) sheet or by folding back the blanket and sprinkling cold Water on the wet sheet that covers him.
Benefits
• A powerful way to lower a high temperature, and is especially useful in typhoid Fever and other continued Fevers.Treatment Indications
• Regulation of heating and cooling in the body to control body temperature.
• To cool a heated (Feverish) body.
• To heat the body to produce Sweating.
• Relaxes the Nervous System.
• Relieves internal Congestion. What you will need
• Two (2) blankets
• One (1) sheet
• One (1) hand towel
• One (1) bath towel
• Pail of Water at 60-70 degrees F.How to apply:
1) Ensure all the Materials are ready.
2) An enema or colonic hydrotherapy is considered to be an important preliminary step, and if needed, give a 10-minute Hot Foot Bath hydrotherapy , with a Cold Compress hydrotherapy to his head, for the entire body should be warm before beginning the Wet Sheet Pack hydrotherapy . If not, precede it with a Hot Full (tub) Bath hydrotherapy .
3) Place a plastic (or rubber sheet) on the bed.
4) Over it, place a double blanket, folded lengthwise, with the edge of the far side hanging longer than the near edge. The upper end of the blanket should cover the lower half of the pillow.
5) Take the wet sheet from the cold Water and wring it as dry as possible. Place it on the blanket, with the upper end a little below the top of the blanket.
6) Help the patient lie on his back on the sheet, with his shoulders 3-4 inches below the upper edge of the sheet.
7) As the patients arms are held up, you quickly wrap the short side of the sheet around his trunk, and also around his nearest leg.
8) Draw the sheet smoothly in contact with the Skin in all places. Tuck it under on the opposite side.
9) Lower the patient’s arms, and then wrap the other side of the sheet smoothly over the arms, trunk, and his farther leg. Fold the sheet over the patient shoulders, and across his neck. Tuck it in.
* Wrap him in the sheet quickly. The wet sheet must come in close contact with the Skin at all points.
10) Wrap the narrower edge of the blanket around the patient’s body and tuck it in.
11) Do the same on the opposite edge, pulling it snugly around the patient. At this point, pull the remainder of the blanket over and tuck it also under his body and under his feet.
* Wrap the patients in the blanket quickly. The dry blanket must prevent circulating air or he may become chilled. Warming up should begin immediately.
12) It may be best to now cover the patient with a second blanket. Additional blankets may be laid over him and tucked in on the sides and about the feet, if needed.
13) Place a towel around the patient’s neck to protect and to keep out the air. Put the hot Water bottle to his feet to hasten warming.
14) Sponge his face with a Cold Compress at the beginning of the pack, and also after the First 10 minutes when the reaction begins (when he begins Sweating).
15) His feet must be kept warm at all times. Take his temperature before and after the pack is given.
16) When the pack is removed, give a Cool Sponge, with brisk drying to the body.
17) Repeat with another Wet Sheet Pack hydrotherapy later that day (or give it daily) until the Fever comes down, then have the patient rest afterward.
* Duration of each Wet Sheet Pack hydrotherapy is 15-20 minutes.
18) Liquid nourishment is best.
2) Neutral Wet-Sheet Pack
These hydrotherapy begins when the temperature of the pack reaches (or slightly exceeds) Skin temperature. After body warming has well begun, this second stage can be prolonged by removing all, but 1-2 dry coverings over the wet sheet.
* The body must continue to be evenly warm, with no circulating air reaching it.
* A neutral bath will accomplish the same purpose as a neutral pack and probably do it better.Benefits
• It’s excellent for Insomnia, and helps put the sleepless to sleep.
• It is also used for mania, Alcoholic delirium, and restlessness.Treatment Indications
• Regulation of heating and cooling in the body to control body temperature.
• To cool a heated (Feverish) body.
• To heat the body to produce Sweating.
• Relaxes the Nervous System.

3) Heating Wet-Sheet Pack
These hydrotherapy begins when the warming pack has raised the body temperature slightly above its usual degree and it ends when general perspiration begins.
Once achieved, it should be continued for about 20 minutes, for best results.
Benefits

4) Sweating Wet-Sheet Pack
These hydrotherapy begins with the onset of general Sweating which may be increased (or prolonged) by additional coverings, hot-Water bottles between blanket layers, or by drinking hot Water or Lemonade. The cold compresses on the head should not be very cold (or renewed too frequently).
Benefits
• It’s excellent for childhood Fevers, capillary Bronchitis, Colds, and also for Obesity and obese rheumatism.(* A child who is so exhausted by the Fever on the body and head, will often fall into a quiet sleep after the pack reaches the heating stage.).
• Also used for Alcoholism, Gout, Influenza, and the elimination of nicotine from the body (which lessens the physical craving for more tobacco).Treatment Indications
• Regulation of heating and cooling in the body to control body temperature.
