Thyroid Gland Diseases

Thyroid Gland Diseases

Thyroid Gland Diseases are the diseases that affect an endocrine gland in the neck consisting of two lobes connected by an isthmus (found at the front of the neck, below the Adam’s apple).

• The Thyroid Gland secretes Hormones, which primarily influence the metabolic rate and protein synthesis.

• The Thyroid hormones regulate vital body functions (such as breathing, heart rate, central and peripheral nervous-system, body weight, muscle strength, menstrual cycles, body temperature, cholesterol levels, etc.).

Major Triggers & Contributors to Auto-Immunity

Stress.
• Environmental toxins.
• Viruses.
• Genetic predisposition.
• Psychological Stress.
Smoking.
• Yersinia enterocolitica Infections (or adenoviruses).
• Ionizing radiation.
• A deficiency of Vitamin D (or Selenium).

How the Thyroid Gland Works

• The thyroid is part of the The Endocrine System, which is made up of glands that produce, store, and release Hormones into the bloodstream so the Hormones can reach the body’s cells.

• Hormonal output from the thyroid is regulated by thyroid-stimulating Hormone (TSH) secreted from the anterior pituitary gland, which itself is regulated by thyrotropin-releasing Hormone (TRH) produced by the hypothalamus.

• The thyroid Hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) are created from Iodine and Tyrosine.

• The thyroid also produces the Hormone calcitonin (plays a role in Calcium homeostasis).

• The two (2) best-known thyroid conditions are:

1) Hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid) – It denotes that the thyroid is producing less T3 and T4 which slows up the body’s Metabolism.

2) Hyperthyroidism (over-active thyroid) – It denotes that the thyroid is producing an excess of T3 and T4 which speeds up the body’s Metabolism. Hyperthyroidism is much less common than Hypothyroidism.

Thyroid Hormone Working Mechanism and Terminology

• The Thyroid Gland is a small butterfly-shaped endocrine gland usually located in the front of the neck, made up of two (2) lobes that lie along the windpipe (trachea), joined together by the isthmus (a narrow band of Thyroid tissue).
• The thyroid-gland releases thyroid Hormones which regulate the Metabolism, growth, development and body temperature.
• The thyroid-gland affects all the other Hormones in the body and its proper regulation is essential to good hormonal balance and health.

Euthyroidism – Normal Thyroid function
Hyperthyroidism – Elevated Thyroid function
Hypothyroidism – Suppressed Thyroid function

• Thyroid Hormones are regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis.
• The hypothalamus secretes thyrotropin releasing Hormone (TRH) in a tropic fAshion that activates the anterior pituitary to secrete thyroid stimulating Hormone (TSH).
• TSH targets the thyroid and elevates thyroid hormone production.
• When adequate thyroid Hormones are produced and secreted, the anterior pituitary stops secreting TSH via a negative feedback mechanism.
• Thyroid hormone helps the body use Energy, stay warm and keep the brain, heart, muscles, and other organs.

• The main Hormone made by the thyroid is thyroxine (T4) because it contains four (4) Iodine molecules.
• Small amounts of triiodothyronine (T3) and more potent thyroid hormone containing three (3) Iodine molecules, however most of the T3 in the blood is made from T4 in other body tissues.

• Thyroid Hormones control the way every tissue in the body uses Energy.
• They are essential to help each cell in the body’s tissue and organs work right.
• For example, thyroid hormone controls the body’s temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, and the rate at which food is turned into Energy (Metabolism).

hyperthyroidism

Normal Range for Thyroid Hormones

TSH (0.45 – 4.5 uIU/mL) (0.5-6 mlU/L)
Free T4 (Direct) (0.82-1.77 ng/dL)
T4 – Thyroxin (5-12.5 ug/dL)
Free T3 – Triiodothyronine (2.0-4.4 pg/mL)
T3 – Triiodothyronine (120-195 mg/dL)
TPO – Thyroid peroxidase AB (0-34 IU/mL)
TGAB – Antithyroglobulin AB (0-40 IU/mL)

hyperthyroidism

Thyroid Hormones Actions

• Increases Metabolism and oxygen consumption.
• Calorigenic effect.
• Stimulates the Nervous System.
• Contributes to growth and development.

TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone)

• The pituitary cells communicate with thyroid by sending TSH (thyroid-stimulating Hormone), into the blood.
• When T4 levels are at the set point, the pituitary gland sends out enough TSH to tell the thyroid to keep making the same amount of T4.
• If the T4 levels get low, the pituitary sends out more TSH to tell the thyroid to make more T4.
• The lower the T4 levels go, the higher the TSH goes.
• The opposite is also true: if the T4 levels get too high, the pituitary sends out less TSH, telling the thyroid to make less T4.

Levels of TSH Measured through Blood Tests
• Hyperthyroidism or Suppressed TSH (0.0 – 0.4 mU/L)
• Normal Range of TSH (0.4 – 4.0 mU/L)
• Subclinical (Mild) Hypothyroidism (4.0 – 10.0 mU/L)
• Hypothyroidism (above 10.00 mU/L)

Factors Affecting The Thyroid

hyperthyroidism

1) Gluten Intolerance

• Elimination of gluten is one of the single most important factors in treating patients with HAshimoto’s thyroiditis.

• The molecular structure of gliadin, the Protein portion of gluten, closely resembles the structure of the Thyroid Gland tissues.

• When gliadin leaves the gut and enters the bloodstream, it is recognized as a foreign Protein that stimulates the production of antibodies.

• • These antibodies tag the gliadin but also attack the Thyroid tissue, meaning the Immune System is attacking the Thyroid in individuals with autoimmune thyroiditis.

• Eliminating gluten 100% from the diet will reduce the antibody response and allow for the intestinal lining to heal from chronic inflammation.

• Healing the intestinal tract lining decreases intestinal permeability, reducing the potential for larger Protein molecules to leak into the blood stream and trigger an inflammatory autoimmune response.

hyperthyroidism

2) Thyroid Suppressing Herbs

• Individuals with Hypothyroidism should avoid the regular or long-term use of herbs (such as Bugleweed, Lemon balm, blue Vervain) that suppress Thyroid function.

hyperthyroidism

3) Thyroid Disruptive Medications

Medications that can disrupt Thyroid function include:
• Antacids (aluminum hydroxide containing antacids),
Anti-Biotics and antifungals (sulfonamides, rifampin, keoconazole),
• Anti-depressants,
• Anti-diabetics (orinase, diabinese),
• Anti-Arrhythmia medications (cordarone, inderol, propanolol, regitine, etc.),
• Aspirin,
• Birth control pills,
Cholesterol lowering medications (colestid, atromid, locholest, questron),
• Coumadin and other blood thinning agents,
Diuretics (lasix),
• Pain medications (morphine, kadian, ms contin, etc.),
Hormone replacement therapy (premarin, anabolic Steroids, growth Hormone, etc.),
• Psychoactive medications (lithium, thorazine, etc.),
Steroids (especially cortisone and prednisone),
Stimulants (amphetamines),

4) Foods Supporting the Thyroid

Thyroid Hormones are made from the compound Tyrosine, hence consuming Tyrosine containing foods help to support the Thyroid.

Mustard Greens (Brassica nigra, Sinapis alba, and others) are high in Tyrosine and also contain goitrogens, but if they are cooked, they are not problematic.

• Other foods that contain Tyrosine include velvet bean seeds, Carob, Oats, Soybean, Spinach, Watercress, Sesame Seeds, Butternut Squash, chaya, Chives, Fava Beans, lamb’s quarters, pigweed, Pumpkin Seeds, snow Peas, and Cabbage.

hyperthyroidism

5) Foods Containing Goitrogens

• Goitrogens are substances that block Iodine utilization.

• Goitrogen-containing foods should be avoided (in their raw form), but cooking usually deactivates the goitrogens.

• Foods that contain goitrogens include Turnips, Cabbage, Mustard, Cassava root, Soybean, Peanuts, Pine Nuts, and Millet.

• All of the Cruciferous Vegetables (especially the uncooked Vegetables) and Soybean products suppress Thyroid Hormone production.

• The Cruciferous Vegetables include Broccoli, brussel sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Kale, Mustard Greens, Radishes, Rutabagas, and Turnips.

hyperthyroidism

6) General Dietary and Supplement Recommendations

• Avoid foods high in glycemic index and gluten.

• Supplements of benefits include fish oil, Cod Liver Oil, or Flaxseed Oil, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Pyridoxine are necessary for normal Thyroid Hormone manufacture.

• The daily consumption of the following Vitamins help support Thyroid function: Vitamin C (500-3000 mg), Vitamin E (400-800 IU), and Vitamin A (800 IU), and Zinc (30 mg).

• Consume nutrient dense Vegetables
• Consume sea Vegetables, nuts, and seeds
• Consume whole berries and Fruits in season
• Consume organic, grass-fed or wild-caught meat (or fish).
• Consume organic, raw, unpasteurized Dairy products.
• Consume small to moderate amounts of gluten-free Whole Grains and pre-soaked legumes

hyperthyroidism

7) Exercise

• Regular exercise stimulates Thyroid Gland secretion and increases tissue sensitivity to Thyroid Hormone.
• Avoid exercises that stimulates the Adrenals (running or activities that stimulate Adrenalin secretion).

hyperthyroidism

8) Excessive Drug Use

• Eliminate or greatly reduce alcohol, caffeine, and sugar consumption.
• Frequent and long-term use of Cannabis or alcohol can suppress Thyroid function.
